Polycarbonate (PC)

Polycarbonat (PC): Der Hochleistungskunststoff

Car headlights, visors of motorcycle helmets, compact discs or eyeglass lenses - there is hardly an area of life in which polycarbonate is still not used. The reasons for this frequent use are quickly found:

Polycarbonate is:

  • transparent and yet colorable
  • scratch-resistant and weatherproof, and easy to process.
  • easy to process.

As plastics experts, we know about the outstanding properties of polycarbonate. Follow us into the world of this high-performance plastic and let us show you its special features. Because polycarbonate is needed everywhere - perhaps also in your next project.

Transparent and robust: Your advantages when using PC to manufacture a workpiece

Polycarbonate is a plastic whose transparency is comparable to that of conventional mineral glass. According to DIN 5036-1, the transmittance is 88% and the refractive index is 1.59. At the same time, the amorphous plastic has high rigidity, hardness, impact resistance and strength.

In addition, polycarbonate meets the requirements of fire class B2 according to DIN 4102. Although the plastic is flammable, the flame extinguishes when the ignition source is removed.

These advantages result in the most common uses for PC:

  • Glazing that is light and strong at the same time
  • visors of safety helmets, headlights and other curved shapes
  • disposable medical products, due to excellent biocompatibility

Due to its properties, PC is mainly used outdoors

The robustness and optical properties of polycarbonate can be improved by appropriate coatings to such an extent that it can be used for unlimited outdoor applications. For example, many modern facades would not be possible without the use of polycarbonate. Here, conventional mineral glass would either be too heavy or impossible to shape into the right form.

But even less avant-garde buildings now rely on polycarbonate for reasons of cost and robustness. Glazing of bus stops made of PC, for example, is much more resistant to vandalism and thus ultimately more cost-effective. But illuminated signs, terrace canopies and solar panels can also be made from PC.

Did you know?

Since its restoration in 2006, the Atomium in Brussels has had windows made of polycarbonate.

The roof of the Olympic Stadium in Athens is made of polycarbonate sheets with a UV-resistant coating.

Polycarbonate can be easily machined and customized

In order to shape polycarbonate into almost any desired form, it can be machined using classic metal-cutting methods. These include:

  • sawing
  • milling
  • drilling
  • Cutting

Since polycarbonate is a thermoplastic material, processing methods for this class of material are of course also considered:

  • punching
  • cold and hot bending
  • forming

Polycarbonate is an extremely flexible material that can be excellently and individually adapted to the desired application.
