Caoutchouc/Rubber

Rubber: A proven material with a wide range of applications

Rubber is often the vernacular term for an entire class of high-quality plastics known as elastomers. These particular plastics are characterized by the following properties:

  • reversibly deformable
  • good weather resistance
  • chemically very heterogeneous, therefore versatile in use
Learn everything important about elastomers here. We show you the differences between natural rubber and synthetic rubbers, explain FKM, EPDM and HNBR and take a look at the chemical and mechanical characteristics of silicones. Sattler SCM offers high-quality solutions and products for all these classes of elastomers. Let us convince you of our portfolio.

The special properties of rubber allow you to use it in a wide range of applications

Rubber offers a whole range of special features that make this class of plastics indispensable for modern industrial production. These include:

  • the visco-elasticity
  • the high durability
  • water-repellent properties
Due to these and other properties, rubber and caoutchouc are used, among other things, in the automotive industry, in mechanical and plant engineering, and in medical and food technology.

Find the right type of rubber for your application

Originally, rubber refers to a substance that we know today as natural rubber. The properties of this raw material have been well researched and have been available on the market for over 100 years. In the meantime, the chemical industry has developed so-called synthetic rubbers that specifically surpass conventional rubber in one or more properties and are thus perfectly suited for special applications.

These include:

  • EPDM (ethylene propylene diene rubbers) is ideal for sealing elements of all kinds.
  • NBR (nitrile rubber) is used to manufacture seals as molded and stamped parts.
  • FKM (fluororubber) - is resistant to mineral oils and is used in engine technology.

EPDM is very suitable for outdoor use

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene rubbers) are synthetic rubbers that are particularly suitable for outdoor use. In addition to its use as a welding and sealing sheet, EPDM is also used as a pipe sealing element or rubber buffer.

EPDM is characterized by high weathering and UV resistance. Its thermal resistance enables EPDM rubber to be used in a wide range of applications.

Very high resistance is one of the advantages of NBR

NBR (nitrile rubber) is one of the most durable elastomers available on the market. Anyone who thinks of this special synthetic rubber only in terms of the familiar rubber gloves is missing out on the full potential of this material. Sattler primarily manufactures bellows in various sizes from NBR. These seemingly inconspicuous components serve to ensure occupational safety by protecting and elastically cushioning moving components of plant and machinery.

FKM is often used as a sealing material

FKM (fluororubbers) are a whole class of different synthetic rubbers that are characterized by great chemical insensitivity. Thus, FKM is a rubber that is not only insensitive to acids and alkalis, but also to aliphatic hydrocarbons. One particular product made of FKM rubber is Usit rings, which combine the advantages of metal rings with those of elastomer sealing elements. These Usit rings are available from Sattler-SCM in a wide range of sizes.

The advantages of natural rubber over synthetic rubber

Natural rubber is a natural product obtained from the bark of the tropical rubber tree. Workpieces made of rubber are characterized by high strength and elasticity. In mechanical engineering, for example, rubber balls are used as valve seats.

Sattler-SCM offers these balls in three different qualities:

  • ground
  • lightly ground
  • unground

Silicone is characterized by a particularly high temperature resistance

Silicone is a special synthetic rubber because it is manufactured on the basis of silicon. This makes it insensitive to a wide range of different chemicals. In addition, silicons are food-safe and non-toxic and can therefore be used safely in the food industry.

Sattler SCM offers a large number of different silicone molded parts in its portfolio for a wide range of applications.

Liquid silicone can be processed well due to its properties

Liquid silicone (LSR) can be used especially for casting individual molded parts. Of course, you will also find this special synthetic rubber at Sattler-SCM.

HNBR is widely used in the automobile industry

HNBR (Hydrogenated Acrylonitrile Butadiene Rubber) is used in the automobile industry due to its good weather resistance and insensitivity to oils and fuels.

Sattler-SCM offers a wide product range of workpieces made of HNBR.

Thermoplastic elastomers are characterized by high moldability

TPE (thermoplastic elastomers) combine the properties of classic elastomers with those of thermoplastics, i.e. plastics that can be permanently deformed under the influence of heat. TPE can be processed into hoses, seals or foamed mats.
