Bellows - Tailor-made for your industry

Bellows protect machine parts that slide mechanically into each other or are connected to each other by joints. Elastic bellows pull or stretch like an accordion and thus protect the internal machine parts from dirt, weathering and other external influences.

Sattler, as a company with a long tradition in plastics processing, has many years of knowledge and expertise in the selection, manufacture and processing of elastomers for bellows.

What is a bellows and where is it used?

From articulated buses to axle boots - bellows come in a wide variety of dimensions, shapes and geometries. Thanks to its flexible design, a bellows can adapt to almost any compression or torsion that requires protection of the structural and machine parts inside it.

In the following, we will show you the industrial fields in which Sattler bellows are used.

Bellows are used in these industries

Moving and interlocking components can be found in a wide range of technical applications. To provide optimum protection for these structural and machine parts, suitably manufactured bellows made of elastomers are used. The following industries rely on the use of bellows:

  • mechanical engineering
  • the automotive industry
  • the aircraft production

Customized bellows from Sattler: Made individually & according to your requirements

Due to the wide range of applications, bellows are usually developed and manufactured individually. In addition to determining the shape, dimensions and geometry, this also involves selecting a suitable elastomer. A bellows that comes into contact with lubricants and fuels must be made of different materials than one that is exposed to high temperature fluctuations and strong UV radiation outdoors.

Bellows in various shapes and designs

At Sattler, we have many years of expertise and up-to-date know-how in the selection and processing of high-quality plastics. Together with you, we plan and manufacture the perfect bellows for your project.

We produce bellows in different materials - according to your requirements

In order to protect the components inside them, bellows must be able to track their movements. For this reason, high-quality elastomers are generally used to manufacture bellows. Inexpensive and robust representatives of this material class are natural rubber or NBR (acrylonitrile butadiene rubber). In addition, bellows can be manufactured as fabric bellows, in which an elastic round fabric is covered with a special plastic. A bellows made of such a composite material impresses with its high robustness.

Bellows as molded and dipped part from Sattler

In principle, bellows can be manufactured in two different ways:

  • as a molded part
  • as diving part

A molded bellows is injection molded or cast in one piece. This method of manufacture is fast, inexpensive and the method of choice for many bellows.

Dipped parts are formed over a suitable mold by repeated immersion in liquid elastomer. This process allows the wall thickness of a bellows to be individually defined and controlled.

Elastomer bellows

Rubber, or natural rubber, is a robust material that is inert to a wide range of chemical and physical environmental influences. Although this plastic has been known for centuries, it still serves - in improved form - as the raw material of choice for numerous industrial products made from hard-wearing and at the same time inexpensive elastomers.

The advantages of bellows made of NBR from Sattler

NBR, i.e. acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, is a synthetic rubber, i.e. unlike rubber it is artificially produced. NBR is highly resistant to a variety of chemicals and solvents and can be used within a wide temperature range. Various additives can be used to significantly change the properties and thus the areas of application of acrylonitrile butadiene rubber.

If you would like to know if your bellows can also be made from NBR, contact us today. At Sattler, we have extensive experience and a wealth of knowledge in the manufacture and processing of high-quality elastomers. Our staff will be happy to help you.

Custom-fit bellows for your automotive and mechanical engineering needs

At Sattler, we develop a suitable bellows made of high-quality elastomers for almost any application. Mechanical engineering and the automotive industry are among the industries with the greatest demand for precisely developed bellows.

It can be used for the gear rod of vehicles

A bellows in a car is found, among other things, on the transmission rod. There, it protects the internal gears and racks, thus ensuring smooth play of these components.

In the overrun brake, the bellows is an important element

A bellows on the overrun brake has various functions. On the one hand, it protects the drawbar that enters the drawbar at the trailer hitch. On the other hand, a bellows on the trailer also ensures the safety of those who have to handle between the trailer and the tractor. The bellows protects against injuries that can be caused by moving metal parts.

Can also be manufactured as a joint cover

Not only lateral movements are protected by a bellows, but also kinks and joints can be surrounded by a bellows. The most prominent examples here are certainly railroad cars and articulated buses.

The bellows is indispensable for the drive shaft

A bellows is indispensable for the drive shaft of a car. The outer joints, which are constantly exposed to heavy dirt and environmental influences, would quickly be damaged without the protection of bellows.

On motorcycles and bicycles, they can be found on the fork of the front wheel

Since the introduction of suspension forks, bellows have become indispensable for motorcycles. Mountain bikes or e-bikes without. They protect the sensitive cylinders of the fork from dirt entering and thus protect sensitive hydraulics or pneumatics of the front suspension.

They are also used on tie rods in vehicles

The tie rod of a vehicle is connected to the track levers and steering gear via various joints. To protect them from external influences, these moving connections are also protected with bellows.

Replacement required: We also manufacture bellows as spare parts

You need something new even though the old machine is still doing an excellent job? Bellows are wearing parts that need to be replaced more often than the components they protect. At Sattler, we'll save your machine for which the manufacturer no longer stocks spare parts by making custom-fit bellows for you.
